Know your situation first

Before writing your speech, consider why you were hired. If you're joining a high-performing team, focus on maintaining momentum and building on existing strengths. If the department has been struggling, acknowledge challenges while projecting confidence about the future.

The size and culture of your team also matters. A formal presentation might suit a large department in a corporate environment, while a smaller team might respond better to an informal chat. Consider what will feel natural for your particular workplace.

Structure your introduction

Gather everyone at a time that works for the team. Avoid busy periods or the run-up to deadlines. Choose a setting where everyone can see and hear you comfortably.

Introduce yourself clearly: your name, your new role, and brief background information that establishes credibility. People want to know you have experience to do the job, but they don't need your full career history.

Show genuine enthusiasm for joining the team. If appropriate, acknowledge what you already know about the team's work or reputation. This shows you've done your homework and value their contributions. Avoid sweeping statements about things you don't yet understand.

Build rapport while maintaining authority

Show you're approachable by inviting questions or suggesting people can speak to you privately. You might say: "I'm happy to answer questions now, or feel free to catch me later if you prefer a private chat." Some team members may be worried about how the change affects them personally.

Acknowledge that you have things to learn about the role and organisation. This demonstrates humility without undermining your position. You can be confident in your abilities while recognising that every workplace has its own way of doing things.

Avoid promises you might not keep. It's better to say you'll look into something than to commit to changes that may not be possible. Stay authentic rather than projecting an artificial image of leadership: people can usually tell when someone is putting on an act.

Keep your speech to ten or fifteen minutes. Have a clear ending rather than letting it trail off: thank people for their time, restate your enthusiasm for working with them, and explain what happens next.

Don't criticise previous management, even if you've been told there were problems. Avoid being too detailed about your plans, as you may need to change direction once you understand the role better. Your first speech sets expectations for your leadership style: focus on being clear, genuine, and confident.

I am going to be a Director of nursing in an Assisted Living Community of 150 people and a staff of 50, 2 RNs, 3 LPNs and 30 Nurses aides.
